On and off, I've tended to read quite a bit. So, I thought I'd put up some reviews of books as I read them. In time, I may go back and add reviews of some of the books I read in the past. Not massively exciting, but I suppose it may be of interest to someone, somewhere (perhaps).
The City and the City - China Mieville
His stuff looked interesting, and this book in particular had some nice reviews, so I thought I'd have a go at it. It's really rather good. It tries to be two things, and succeeds at both. On the one hand, it's a detective thriller in a strange land, on the other hand, it's some kind of metaphor for the crossed lives in cities, where everyone goes about their lives trying to ignore much of what's going on around them. The 'unseeing' starts off strange and eventually becomes surprisingly normal. I won't say more on that, for fear of spoilering. On the detective front, it feels like the story stalls about two thirds through, but it comes back to life with a rather good conclusion. In all, a solid thumbs up.
