So, er, I have some DVDs. Given I've gone and put all the books I'm reading on the web, I might as well do the same with DVDs. Exciting, eh?
DVDs I have
Here we go:
- Bad Taste: A wonderfully cheap alien invasion B-movie. Why exactly it's an 18, I have no idea. Perhaps it's for the shockingly poor special effects. The combination of cheapness and humour make it something very enjoyable. It's an impressive contrast to Mr. Jackson's ring-based epics. Rather nicely, he also stars in this, too, and pretty much steals the show.
- Battle Royale: Japanese schoolkids killing each other. Obviously a great plot. Fairly heavy going, but still rather good.
- Blade Runner: Lovely noir sci-fi. Ridley Scott's prototypical cyberpunk. The director's cut, obviously.
- Brazil: Terry Gilliam's bureaucratic dystopia. Up there with 1984 and Brave New World, if you ask me. Totally wonderful design.
- A Bug's Life: Pixar do lovely computer graphics.
- Clockwork Orange: Ultraviolence and Beethoven. Mmmm.
- Dr. Strangelove: Kubrick's great black comedy.
- El Mariachi/Desperado: Two for one DVD. It's like some kind of Mexican Quentin Tarantino thing.
- Fight Club: A Chuck Palahniuk book becomes a Major Motion Picture! How cool is that? Mindless violence that isn't so mindless.
- Futurama: Yay for Futurama, the scifi Simpsons. Except better.
- Ghost in the Shell: All you could want in a cyberpunk anime. More or less.
- Groundhog Day:A romcom set in a Kafkesque world where all actions are futile? With Bill Murray? Must be one of Caroline's. ;)
- The Incredibles: Best Pixar Ever. I've watched it far too many times.
- Kill Bill: More violence than you can shake a stick at. A sharp metal stick. The sort of film Quentin Tarantino would make while trying to make a pastiche of a Quentin Tarantino film.
- The Matrix: Well, it's a classic. Totally shallow, but fantastic effects.
- Mindcandy: A DVD of computer graphics demos. Sounds silly, but there are some wonderful pieces of coding demonstrated here.
- Office Space: Pretty much Dilbert in live-action form. Not sure it fully works as a film, but some of the scenes encapsulate office life sooo well.
- Pi: Black and white film about a nutty Jewish numerologist. With Aphex Twin sound track. Odd.
- Ronin: I bought this film pretty much at random during a 2-for-3 offer. A rather above-average thriller.
- Spaced (series 1 and 2): Genius comedy.
- The Sting: Darned cheap music shops, selling the DVDs I want to prices I can afford. The Sting is just a great film. It won approximately 3 billion Oscars, and deserves it. The standard to which other con films aspire.
- This is Spinal Tap: Classic spoof rock documentary.
- Tron: Oooh. Compsci film from my childhood. Couldn't resist. Horribly dated in places, but a classic in its own way.
- Twelve Monkeys: I'm a great fan of Terry Gilliam's work. Especially if it's dystopic, time-travelling, plague-ridden sci-fi.
- Wargames: Incredibly cheesy 80s computer hacker film. A piece of my childhood.
- The Work of Chris Cunningham: Guy mostly known for his weird music videos - notably Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. There's some nicely out-there stuff, showing what's possible.
DVDs that will be mine (oh yes)
Once upon a time, I didn't have the money to buy DVDs. Now I don't have the time to watch them. When I do, I shall splurge it on the following:
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Yay, Terry Gilliam.
- Cowboy Bebop: An absolutely excellent vaguely noir sci-fi anime.
- Leon: A milk-drinking hitman and a little girl team up. Obviously.
DVDs that I'd rather not have
Some films suck. Like this lot.
- Alien 3: Suck, suck, suckity suck. Still, could be worse. Apparently one of the earlier scripts set it aboard a wooden spacestation. That's how low you have to stoop to make this film worse.
- Terminator 3: Follow the Alien school of film design! Take the victory of the second film, and throw it away. Well done.
- Dark City: Some people seemed to like this film. I thought it was nonsensical and ultimatiely unfulfilling. It's basically pants.
- Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions: I quite enjoyed the films, but I just can't be bothered to buy the sequels. They just seem like an obvious way to extract more money from people like me. There's just nothing new, and it bogs the whole thing down.
- Speed 2: Worse film I've seen. The plot makes less than no sense. Just thought you might like to know.
- On Deadly Ground: Although this is a bit of a challenger to the title. Mysteriously, On Hostile Ground is also insanely poor.
